Job Description

Overview

Ready to play a key role in building the future of living? Join Samara in tackling California’s housing shortage and enabling people to attain sustainable housing without compromising design or quality. Our flagship product, Backyard, is a fully turnkey, premium accessory dwelling unit (ADU) designed for homeowners and real estate developers. As we expand our offerings and scale our in-house development initiatives, we’re at a pivotal moment, redefining homeownership through high-quality, attainable infill housing. Backed by top-tier investors, including Airbnb, Thrive Capital, and 8VC, Samara is positioned for significant growth and market impact.

As one of the first hires on the Development team, you’ll also play a foundational role in defining and establishing site construction processes, procedures, and training programs for future hires. You will work closely with the Development, Acquisitions, and Construction teams to align efforts, refine workflows, and ensure successful project delivery.

Samara’s field operations are lean—site staffing is small and nimble, and this role requires hands-on leadership. Ideal candidates will balance a strong trade background (e.g. framing, general trades, site prep) with sophistication in scheduling, documentation, subcontractor management, and software systems integration.

If you’re passionate about building high-quality housing and strive for continuously improving field operations, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

  • Play a critical role on the Development Team supporting 4 or more projects at different stages of the project lifecycle.
  • Manage construction phase project planning and support the development manager in procuring vendors.
  • Lead daily field operations across multiple job sites largely focused on horizontal scope like —mobilization, layout, grading, utilities, foundations, site logistics, landscaping and final completion.
  • Coordinate subcontractors and vendors, supervise scope execution, and ensure alignment with Samara’s modular system methodology.
  • Manage construction schedule and resources to meet milestones across all sites, including look‑aheads and conflict resolution.
  • Produce daily logs, site photos, safety documentation, and weekly progress reports.
  • Oversee quality control and compliance with California building codes, Cal‑OSHA requirements, local jurisdiction inspections, and Samaras design intent.
  • Track RFIs, submittals, material deliveries, change orders, and punch‑lists through closeout and turnover.
  • Enforce site safety: conduct tailgate briefings, maintain safety records, foster a clean and secure jobsite.
  • Collaborate closely with the Development Manager, Project Engineer, Samara Manufacturing, and Samara Site Installation teams.
  • Institutionalize field best practices: mentor field staff, document processes, contribute to team culture and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate with Site Installation team for material tracking and logistical coordination specific to modular home assemblies
  • Manage quality documentation and progress photo/video capture to ensure that all work is documented for future reference.
  • Think critically about process implementation and documentation to establish the road map for future hires in this role.

What We’re Looking For

  • 5–10 years of progressive field construction leadership, with recent experience as Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent (ideally residential/multi‑family or single‑family projects).
  • Proven ability to manage multiple residential construction sites concurrently with competing priorities and changing conditions.
  • Strong blueprint and specification reading skills, with accurate oversight of installations and submittal/RFI management .
  • Experience in residential construction methods, including site infrastructure, wood‑frame construction (or modular execution), foundations, utilities.
  • Familiarity with construction software: Autodesk Construction Cloud, Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft Project/Excel, Openspace or similar.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification, First Aid/CPR; valid California driver’s license.
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of building codes, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem‑solving abilities; proven ability to earn subcontractor respect and hold accountability on site.
  • Exceptional time and priority management, with ability to jump between multiple sites efficiently.
  • Equity‑friendly mindset: your opportunity to shape long‑term growth at a mission‑driven startup.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Understanding of modular workflows (transport, delivery schedules, off-site coordination)
  • California CSLB licensure.
  • OSHA certifications
  • EIT/FE or progressing toward PE licensure (not required)
  • LEED or ESG awareness if aligned with sustainability goals
  • Bilingual

Why Join Us

  • Be the first Field Superintendent on the development team, helping shape the team’s operations from the ground up and establish scalable best practices.
  • Join a mission‑driven team solving California’s housing shortage through design, modular innovation, and responsible development.
  • Gain equity ownership in a Series A startup positioned for rapid growth
  • Work with an experienced Development Manager and Entrepreneurial leadership
  • Dive into modular residential construction — cutting-edge efficiency , repeatable systems, and innovation

What We Offer

  • Salary range of $135-155K and performance-based bonuses.
  • Hybrid work schedule with 3 days each week in our Redwood City office (when not on site)
  • Snacks and Lunch on days in-office
  • Early stage employee equity.
  • Exceptional health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401k eligibility after 6 months.
  • Flexible PTO policy.
