Position Details
The Driver Supervisor at Stella-Jones is responsible for various aspects of driver management, equipment coordination, training, compliance, and operational support. This Supervisor will play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of our transportation department.
Key Responsibilities:
Driver Management:
• Review driver resumes, schedule and conduct interviews, and coordinate offers of employment with HR.
• Assign new drivers to driver trainers and facilitate introductions.
• Conduct new driver orientation and training sessions.
• Supervise driver PTO (Paid Time Off) and coverage needs.
• Conduct investigations regarding safety or operational concerns, facilitate corrective action, and provide additional training as necessary.
• Supervise drivers with worker's compensation claims and complete required reporting.
• Review payroll for accuracy.
Equipment and Logistics Coordination:
• Coordinate with shop personnel and office personnel to assign trucks to drivers.
• Ensure that assigned equipment has all necessary tools and supplies to perform work.
• Monitor and maintain paperwork in all equipment.
• Spot check trucks and trailers on yards for compliance and safety issues.
• Collaborate with maintenance staff to ensure equipment maintenance files are properly maintained at all locations.
• Review crane inspections and collaborate with the shop to ensure necessary repairs are completed.
• Facilitate communication between drivers, dispatch, and shop personnel to schedule repairs.
• Oversee out-of-the-ordinary dispatch activities, including direct movement of poles for customers between locations. Coordinate with plant dispatchers to facilitate third-party moves. Ensure accurate information flows to accounting for invoicing.
• Work with the Director of Transportation to maintain equipment needs and placement.
• Collaborate with the Director of Transportation to schedule equipment replacement.
Compliance and Safety:
• Assist the DOT Compliance Supervisor in scheduling random drug and alcohol screenings for drivers.
• Assist DOT Compliance Supervisor with regular safety meetings and training sessions for drivers to ensure adherence to safety protocols and regulations.
• Works in conjunction with DOT Compliance Supervisor to Monitor driver compliance with safety policies, procedures, and regulations, taking corrective action as needed.
• Implement and enforce safe driving practices, including defensive driving techniques, load securement, and proper vehicle inspections.
• Collaborate with the DOT Compliance Supervisor to ensure compliance with all DOT regulations and requirements.
• Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards and addressing any deficiencies promptly.
• Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes related to driver safety, and incorporate them into training and operational procedures.
• Promote a safety-first culture among drivers and provide ongoing support and resources to promote safe work practices.
Qualifications
• Five or more years of experience in the transportation and logistics industry, including work in driver management / driver relations.
• Experience with or exposure to Shipping & Receiving, Dispatch, Driving, and Training.
• CDL preferred with a clean driving record.
• Driving experience & Driver training experience preferred
• Experience implementing fleetwide safety policies
• Familiarity with DOT regulations and compliance requirements.
• Proficient in MS Office Suite and other relevant industry software applications; Excel experience preferred
• High school diploma or equivalent required; Additional education or applicable coursework a plus
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with drivers, dispatch, and other personnel.
